About JWE

JWE was founded in 2001 with the goals of expanding human capabilities within a context of freedom and justice; developing a new generation of students linked to distinguished scholars whose work encompasses ethical, political and economic dimensions of human welfare and development; fostering an interdisciplinary approach that works against the modern tendency toward separation of economics from moral and political contexts; and prioritizing research linking normative and empirical questions. Amartya Sen served as the program's first chair. Walter Johnson succeeded him as chair in January 2009.
